The best trails in Monteverde go through some of the most amazing wilderness you will ever hike on. The most well-known is the Nuboso Trail, the Camino is the easiest and the Roble and Chomogo are the most strenuous. MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST RESERVE:

This reserve was founded in 1972 by the US Quaker families and is now managed by the Tropical Science Center, a nonprofit organization committed to preserving and defending the vulnerable ecological system. This reserve encompasses 26,000 acres of the pristine cloud forest.

This reserve owns 2.5% of the world’s total biodiversity. From the enormous old trees to the almost 500 kinds of birds, 120 distinct sorts of amphibians and reptiles, and more than 3,000 species of plants, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is an enchanting place for nature lovers.

HOW TO GET TO THE MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST RESERVE?

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is approximately 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) from downtown Santa Elena. The road is gravel after you pass the gas station of Cerro Plano, and there are plenty of signs all over the place.

If you are driving, you will find a big parking lot about a mile before getting to the preserve (Shuttles). Which, for the safety of the car rental and your peace of mind, could be the best idea.

There are bathrooms, a big souvenir shop and a good restaurant at the entrance of the reserve.

Right on the outside, you will also find an art gallery and souvenir shop that has a fantastic hummingbird garden. (The Hummingbirds Gallery).

The Hiking Trails in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve has 11 hiking trails with different distances from 300 meters to 2000 meters, making it accessible for every one of various physical levels.

There are numerous viewpoints, a hanging bridge, and some small but charming waterfall wholly surrounded by rainforest.

The paths are very well-kept and planned out. There are indications in every cross-section, so it’s difficult to get lost.

The views are stunning, particularly the one up to the Continental Divide. You can observe the Nicoya Peninsula and look over a considerable portion of the cloud forest. It is impressive.

Paying for a tour guide who will interpret and show you all the hidden gems in this amazing rainforest, is absolutely worth it.

THE BEST TRAILS OF THE MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST RESERVE

Nuboso Trail | Trails of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
SENDERO BOSQUE NUBOSO (CLOUD FOREST TRAIL):

This is probably the most hiked off all the trails in the reserve. It is mostly flat, and easy to walk and has some magnificent strangler fig trees and fantastic diversity.

Length: 1.2-mile (1.9-KM)

Elevation gain: 213-foot (65-meter)

Time at a regular pace: 1.5 hours

EL CAMINO

(THE ROAD):

Compared to other trails, it is wider and more open, which allows for more sunlight and, as a result, more butterflies and birds like guans, mixed flocks and hummingbirds. Good for families.

Length: 1.2 miles (2 km)

Elevation Gain: 131 feet (40 m)

Time: 1.25 hours

EL ROBLE AND CHOMOGO TRAILS

This is the most strenuous of all trails in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It is quite steep with dozens of steps to climb, however, it is less hiked and full of wilderness.  Fantastic for true nature lovers.

Length: 1.1 miles (1.8 km)

Elevation: 492 feet (150 m)

Time: 1.25 hours

CUECHA TRAIL (GOING TO THE WATERFALL)

This is one of the shortest, but very beautiful trails in the Reserve, it goes along the Cuecha River and ends up at a platform from the one you can see an amazing waterfall and a great forest wall.

Length: 1.2 miles (1.9 km)

Elevation gain 213 feet (65 m)

Time: 1.5 hours to complete
