Transcribed Podcast (Extract about Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna)

Then usually itineraries will take you to Arenal Volcano, where the adventure awaits. Okay, Arenal, Arenal, it’s in the north area, sort of leaning to the west. Very close to the biggest lake in Costa Rica is a man-made lake, actually called Arenal Lake.

And it’s right at the very edge of the volcano, the Arenal volcano.

It’s very close to the town of La Fortuna. That’s why you hear those two names always together. It’s like saying Machu Picchu and Cusco.

The last important town before you reach the national park. Arenal Volcano will be La Fortuna. La Fortuna, meaning the fortunate one or the fortunate. Incredibly, La Fortuna was named like that before the eruption of the Arenal volcano.

Additionally, despite the eruption being so close, it never touched it because the entire bloom and explosion moved in the opposite direction of La Fortuna, towards the west side. So they were actually safe from their neighbor’s eruption. So this is La Fortuna town.

And then we have to say something about the Arenal. The Arenal is not an active volcano. It was active up until 2010. Still, there are sources that picture it as an active volcano. No, it isn’t. What’s really active are the hot springs. It’s got some of the best hot springs in the world. Named by Forbes and Travel Leisure. It has incredible spas and a stunning landscape. It has the lake.

It has so many adventures to choose from. It is as though you could remain there for an entire month without engaging in the same activity. It’s incredibly diverse in that way. It’s a hub for adventurers. So keep on listening, and we’ll learn about some of what you can do in Arenal and some records about the volcano. So let me tell you a little bit about the geographical area of Arenal and La Fortuna.

Arenal and La Fortuna are sort of extended. So we’re having several areas where you could stay. You could stay in the area of La Fortuna, where there are some nice hotels, there are lots of restaurants and stores—you know, it’s a town; it’s an active tourist town.

They have banks, they have supermarkets, and so on. Then you have, on the side of, let’s say, on the northern side of La Fortuna, the area where you will find the waterfall, La Fortuna.

And that’s, it’s like on the way to the Chato volcano, which is the volcano next to the Arenal. When you see it in the picture, you can see it in the blog. Here you will see that there is the Arenal volcano, and next to it there is a sort of cut-off mountain.

It used to be a volcano, just like Arenal Volcano. It blew up like 500 years ago, and the top was blown out. So the Chato volcano is one of the areas where people stay. There is a lot of biodiversity in that region. You can find an excellent chocolate tour too. You can find the waterfall and several hiking trails that are worth a visit.

Then you find the most popular area, which is the area that goes from La Fortuna to the very entrance of the Arenal volcano or to the very or close to the entrance to the national park.

So we have in this area; this is where you will find the high-end hotels, mostly all of them. You will find in that area mostly all the hot spring complexes and all the thermae. You will see them there. You’ll find some great canopy tours as well as farming tours there. There are lots of livestock, or there used to be a lot of livestock farms in that area. So there are lots of tours related to that. Horseback riding, of course, atv, you know, it’s that sort of environment.

While in Chato, you will find it’s more of a rainforesty, nature-oriented environment.

Then you have behind the national park where you will actually find some of the hanging bridges—the sky adventure hanging bridges. You will find the Observatory Lodge, Rancho Margot Organic Farm. You know, all of those are sort of behind the national park.

You have to pass the entrance of the national park to get there. And this is an area where it’s very easy; it’s very rainforesty. Definitely it was the most affected area for the eruption. So in this part of Arenal, of course near the national park, you will find the lava flows, the old lava flows, mainly very sharp rock with very interesting history and stories. You will find some projects to see them and some tours where you can see the old lavas.

Then you can go into the areas—I’m talking of sky adventures in that area. The hotels are dedicated to the forest and the lake.

Because right there we have the fourth area of La Fortuna and Arenal, which is the lake. The lake is not as popular or visited as Arenal, and God only knows why. There are very few hotels. They have wonderful windsurfing in January, February, and March, which are the windier months.

I mean, it’s actually December, January, and February, mostly January and February. And it’s a very calm environment with a lot of rainforest. Also, you can also find farms, and several Airbnbs will be located in that area. Area. So those are the main four areas of Arenal.

Then we have what are the activities in Arenal? In Arenal, wow, that’s a long list. Like I’m saying, you can stay there for a month and don’t repeat. It’s just as simple as that. And I’m not saying not to repeat the same tour operator; you’re not repeating the same activity. There are dozens of activities, super cool, super well designed, with very good food, and very good transportation. It’s a very well organized area.

So in this area, you can go relax in the hot springs or go for spa treatments. They have some of the best in the world, literally speaking, named by Forbes and Travel Leisure as the best in the world. You can go hiking in so many different sorts of forests. It’s not only that you can go hiking into different rainforest projects; the climate will be different.

The animals, the birds, and the insects will be different, and the environment will be different. So it’s hiking in trails around the volcano. In the area of the volcano. You can go to Rio Celeste, the Blue River. You can go up to Nicaragua, go into the Cano Negro Tour, go into the Rio Frio, go across the border, say hi on the border, and come back.

You can go ziplining in so many ways. They’re countless. No, they’re not countless. I’m sure that if I count them one by one, there’ll be a number for them, but really there are so many. Then you can go do several activities in the water. Kayaking. So. Sup. You can do so much canyoning.

Must-visit destinations in Costa Rica, Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna

Among the must-visit destinations in Costa Rica, Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna this is the one where you will find a great diversity in activities as well as in flora and fauna.

You can go rappelling and canyoning down the waterfalls, like, really tall waterfalls. Like something I will never forget. I almost peed in my pants; I was so terrified. But my son was behind me, you know, was in front of me. So I had to do it because I couldn’t be seen as a coward. But it’s really. It’s. It’s something to behold.

This is Arenal. It’s something to enjoy every minute of it. Don’t stay in a hotel thinking only about the hotel; you’ll hardly sleep there. There is so much to do!

However, there are hotels that can offer a lot of these experiences at their base.

And there are hotels that are so gorgeous, you don’t want to go out from them. It’s just as simple as that. It’s just like you have paradise outside, but you have paradise inside. Those are fantastic for the honeymoons.

So if you want to know more about that or anything else, let me know. Talk about guided tours. It’s important to take some of these tours with a guide. Tours like hanging bridges, for instance, or, you know, cocoa tours—the tour to the waterfall.

All of these tours are so enhanced by having a good tour guide that will tell you the stories behind all that you’re seeing. You know, things without meaning are just meaningless, you know? And the tour guides are there to give you the local meaning, to give you their heart about it. So give a chance to the tour guides of Arenal to show you this place. They have so many stories.

They grew up with a volcano in their back—in their backyard, actually. So, yeah, I would highly recommend going for a couple of guided tours in the area. Go for the hot springs, if your hotel doesn’t have any, and go for spa treatment. Save some money if you don’t have much to do one of those because it’s super cool.

There are two or three fantastic places for that in that zone. Then we have to move to all weather and biodiversity in the area. We’re talking serious here, okay?

Weather, tropical climate, pretty much like Tortuguero, maybe not as humid and oppressive, although it can compare. It’s a very hot place; it’s very warm. The temperatures are pretty much the same, from 25 to 30 Celsius, 70 to 86 Fahrenheit. And these, of course, contribute to the biodiversity. The rainfall is pretty much the same as in Tortuguero. It rains, wow, eight months of the year. They have four sort of sunny seasons, you know, but it’s separated. So although in the mornings it’s usually very sunny, it rains in the afternoon. It happens mostly all over Costa Rica in the rainy season.

One of the things that I forgot is that probably the best times to go are March and April. February, March, and April, or September and October, interestingly, because it’s the sunny season in the Caribbean.

So talk about biodiversity. We’re talking about more than 500 species of birds here, wherever you see. I don’t know what is brighter, birds or flowers. I mean, it may sound somewhat cliché, but the birds, butterflies, and flowers in this region are truly a painter’s dream. And I’m a painter.

There are so many different colors. And the birds go from small, tiny hummingbirds to eagles, hawks, you know, the oropendolas, which have this weird sound that I might get to put somewhere in this podcast.

It is a place to enjoy nature because it’s super luscious. It’s actually one of the most diverse places in Costa Rica, I should say. Reptiles and amphibians are also abundant, as well as red-eyed tree frogs and several snakes.
